Foot and mouth update

As some of you may be aware, a case of foot and mouth (FMD) was confirmed in Germany on the 10th January 2025. Foot and mouth is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hooved livestock which can have significant economic impacts in the event of an outbreak.

The symptoms of FMD are similar to that of Bluetongue and are listed below. Reporting suspected cases to your vet or the APHA is more important than ever considering this emerging outbreak.

Symptoms:
Fever
Drooling
Blisters of the mouth and feet
Decreased appetite
Milk drop
Multiple animals affected in the group

Unlike Bluetongue, Foot and Mouth disease is spread directly between animals and infected material e.g. bedding, feed, clothing, equipment, vehicles. Any cloven hooved animal can be affected i.e. Pigs, sheep, camelids, cows and goats

If you suspect a case of foot and mouth on your farm please call the APHA on 03000 200 301 or call the practice on 01825 764268 to discuss the symptoms with one of our vets.
