With the continuing hot weather we have had an increasing number of adder bite cases in dogs, specifically on the forest.
What is an Adder?
The Adder is the UK’s only venomous snake, they area a grey/brown colour with a distinct zig-zag pattern down their bodies. In warm weather they bask on paths and in open areas, this might be when you (and your dog) catch sight of them!
What happens when a dog gets bitten?
- You may notice your dog yelp but not always! Some more stoic dogs might not react at the time
- Lameness, sudden onset on a walk or just after
- Swelling of the affected limb, again this might not be immediately very obvious in fluffy dogs
- Licking persistently in a specific area
- Puncture wounds – might be seen in dogs with short/fine fur
If you think your dog has been bitten by an adder, take it the vet immediately.
What to do if you suspect your dog has been bitten:
– Keep your dog warm and calm if possible and carry them if you can, to the car. Excessive movement can increase spread of the venom in the blood.
– Bathe the affected area in cold water to reduce the swelling
The veterinary care team will administer pain relief, anti-inflammatory drugs and emergency fluid therapy. In some cases, anti-venom is sourced to be administered, however it is not indicated for use in all cases.
