Urgent Cat Food Recall

Please read if you are a cat owner. Fold Hill foods recall several food products because of safety concerns.

The Royal Veterinary College has found a potential link between certain cat food batches and a recent surge in the number of cases of potentially fatal feline pancytopaenia.

This is a dangerously low level of blood cells. Symptoms are initially vague ( off colour and off food) but as the condition progresses then pale gums, bleeding, collapse and even death may be seen.

Affected cat foods include those by Pets at Home AVA, Applaws and Sainsburys hypoallergenic. Batches can be found at http://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/alert/fsa-prin-36-2021

What should I do if I feed my cat this food?

Stop immediately and change to a different diet. We would normally advise to change your pet’s diet gradually but in this case it is more important to stop feeding the affected food.

Then follow the instructions in the link above to contact the manufacturer.

If your cat is unwell or you are concerned then please contact the surgery for a consultation. If your cat is not unwell then you can opt to monitor them for now or book them in for a routine blood test to check that their cell levels are adequate.
